Willebrord Snell

He attended the University of Leiden where he studied law. However, he wanted to work with mathematics. He even tough math while he studied law. He was able to give mathematics lectures at Leiden on special day.
He graduated with his degree in 1607. Rudolph Snell, his father, was the professor of mathematics in Leiden. When he died in 1613, Willebrord took over the position of professor in university of Leiden. Snell worked a lot with mathematics and optics but also with astronomy and navigation. He worked with comets in the navigation field and he published Typhis Batavus for Navigation.
Snell contributed to the science of optics when, in 1621, he discovered the basic law of refraction. Refraction is the bending of waves caused by a change in their speed when they move from one medium to another. However, it did not become known until 1703 when Huygens published Dioptrically which included Snell's discovery.
Other major accomplishment include Eratosthenes Batavus, which was a way of measuring earth by triangulations and would eventually become the foundation of modern geodesy; and improving "pi" estimation, by using a 96 sided polygon. Snell also worked with loxodrome, the path on the sphere that makes constant angle with the meridians.
Willebrord van Roijen Snell died at the age of 46 in Leiden, Netherlands on October 30, 1626. He had stayed and did all his studies in the Netherlands. Although he did not have a very long life span, he contributed a lot to the science of optics and mathematics.

Last Sunday, my parents, my best friend Jane and I visited a cave at Maros called Leang-leang. It was my first time to visit the cave.
The cave was famous for its primitive cave wall-paintings which were some hand prints and wild boar paintings. The cave and its surroundings were turned into a national park, so they were well taken care of. My parents took a rest at a small hut provided for visitors of the park, while Jane and I explored the cave with a guide. We had to climb several metal stairs to get to the cave, because it was embedded into a small mountain. The next stop was a place where a lot of seashells littered the ground and some were actually piled into a big mound! The guide said that these piles of seashells are called ‘kjokkenmoddinger’, or kitchen trash. The humans who lived there ate the seashells and dumped the leftovers in their ‘kitchen’. The last place was a small museum where they had skeletons of the humans who lived in the caves. The skeletons, along with some roughly made jewelry and weapons were placed inside glass cases for display. The walls of the museum were adorned with photographs taken when they excavated the site.

A brush with a shark

In we went, and the waves were big, but something funny was going on. There were little fish everywhere. They were flying through the water, skimming through our legs.
